Movie Plot: In 2035, the crew of the Ares III mission to Mars discovered Acidalia planitia on Martian Solar Day (Sol) on 18 of the 31-sol expedition. A strong dust storm threatens to topple their Mars Ascending Vehicle (MAV), stopping the mission. During the evacuation, astronaut Mark Watney was struck by the debris and lost in the storm, and telemetry was stopped from his suit’s biomanitter. With Watney dead, the storm worsens by another, and the MAV is on the verge of topping, with mission commander Melissa Lewis ordering the crew to unload and return to their orbiting vessel, the Hermes.

Watney wakes up after a storm with a warning of low oxygen and returns to the crew’s surface housing (“hub”). Performing self-surgery, he removes the debris from his stomach that destroyed his biominator. He starts a video diary. Lack of communication with Earth, its only chance of rescue is through the next Mars mission, four years later: Ares IV will be 3,200 kilometers (2,000 mi) away at the Schiaparei Crater.
