Movie Plot: Boston Police Department officer Detective Sergeant Nick Walker and Detective Lt. Bobby Hayes discover and steal several gold sharks while on duty. Nick cuts his part under an orange tree plant in his garden; His wife, Julia, thinks the tree is a surprise gift and mentions how content they are together in their lives. Nick realizes that he doesn’t need the gold, and decides to present it as evidence. Later during a raid, Hess tells Nick that he can’t turn her into gold, Hess then shoots and kills Nick. Time stops around Nick and he falls into a vortex in the sky.
Later in life, Nick finds that he faces eternal damnation for his theft. As a penance, Nick is recruited for R.I.P.D. (Rest in Peace Department). R.I.P.D. Responsible for finding and returning those spirits who refuse to move forward in the afterlife. Left uncontrolled, these souls become “dead”, demons disguised as humans, and when their souls begin to rot, the environment revolves around them. He is partnered with Roycephus “Roy” Pulsifier, a former US marshal and participant in the American Civil War. His first stop is at a cemetery to see Nick’s funeral, and Nick attempts to make Julia his presence, but is not recognized. Roy states that R.I.P.D. Officers are given new identities and appearances to let them know that the afterlife exists. Nick appears as an old Chinese man while Roy appears as a beautiful white woman.
