Lenny Belardo became the first American pope and named Paayas XIII. Soon after his election, he caused upheaval with a desire to reject both campaigning at the Vatican and the liberal philosophy of his predecessor. Sister Mary, the nun, who raised Leni, is brought in as her private secretary, and immediately establishes herself as the vatican’s secretary of state, Cardinal Voilo’s principal rival. Cardinal Spencer, Lenny’s mentor and favourite for the Pope, is upset at his loss in the Papa election. Despite the efforts of Spanish and Voilo, Lena’s plan is to revitalise conservative Christianity. Laney forced Voelo to tell that the liberal powers at Cardinal College blocked the choice of the conservative Spencer as pope, which resulted in an agreement between the two men to use Lenny as a puppet. When Lenny Voelo threatens to expel her, the liberal cardinal is forced to swear loyalty to her. Later, during a chance encounter with Ester, the wife of a Pontifical Swiss guard, Lenny made a seizure.
After esther’s baby was born, Lenny finally meets the Italian prime minister, a man of the same age and an attraction towards himself. Laney gives him a list of shocking and strong demands, using political blackmail to get his way. Lenny Cardinal Dusoleier, her childhood friend and now in charge of sanctioning new priests, is to block the entrance of new priests who don’t follow clerical celibacy – and homosexuals, regardless of their adherence. A youth seminar in St. Peter’s Square refused to obey and committed suicide.
