Movie Plot: In 1889, in Vienna, Austria-Hungary, a magician named Essanheim was arrested by Walter Uhl, chief inspector of the Vienna Police, during a magic show involving Necromency. Later, Uhl told Crown Prince Leopold the life story of Eisenheim.

Essenheim was born to a cabinet-maker and became interested in magic after meeting a traveling magician. He also fell in love with Sophie, Duchess von Tashen, but the two were forbidden to see each other as a former farmer. They met secretly but were caught one day and separated by force. Eisenheim proceeded to study magic by traveling the world, and returned to perform in Vienna fifteen years later. During a performance, she confronts adult Sophie and learns that she hopes to marry Crown Prince Leopold, who is rumored to be cruel towards women and was murdered in the past. Essenheim holds a private show for the Crown Prince and humiliates him during the period.
