Movie Plot: Matty Ross’s father was murdered by Tom Channi at the age of 14. While collecting his father’s body in Fort Smith, Arkansas, Matti asked the local sheriff about The Discovery of Channi. He tells her that Chanie is the 24th. “Lucky” Ned has fled to Indian territory with Paper and his gang, where the sheriff has no authority, so he was deputy U.S. Marshall inquires about hiring. The sheriff gives three recommendations, and Matty Roster chooses Cogburn. Cogburn initially cancelled his offer, assuming he doesn’t have the money to hire him, but he aggressively raises money by horse-trading with Colonel Stonehill.

Texas Ranger La Beau arrives in the city of La Beau, chasing Cheney on charges of killing a Texas state senator. Labeau offered to join Cogburn, but Matty rejected his offer. She wants to hang Cheney in Arkansas for the murder of his father, not for the assassination of a senator in Texas. Matty also insists on traveling with Cogburn, but he leaves without him, went with La Beau to catch Chana and split the prize.
